Hello and welcome to "Five Minutes With...", our latest blog feature. Each month, we'll be having a brief chat with one of our marvellous suppliers... about life, the universe, and everything. By which I mean interiors and travel, obvs.
We work with a huge range of clever and creative maker-types, who craft all sorts of beautiful products, from ceramics, candles and chocolate, through prints, pencils and planters, to soap, sculptures and... some other great things. Join us for a glimpse behind the curtain and see what makes them tick.
First up, we'll be talking to the very lovely Gayle Mansfield, from (yep, you guessed it) Gayle Mansfield Designs. Launched in July 2016, we love their witty and bold typographic prints. Check these out, so much awesome:
Ok, let's skip to it:
Gayle, can you tell us about your production process and materials?
We design and produce minimal art/typography prints and cards. We design using Sketch and we print to order. All of our prints are produced in our studio, on our giclee printer, using 230gsm premium heavyweight matte paper and fade resistant inks. The process is fairly manual as we cut each print out by hand. I did have a scalpel incident when I first started, but am very adept now!
We're relieved to hear it! Scalpel injuries are a very serious occupational hazard. Moving on to safer topics... which is your favourite room (or corner) of your home and why?
I love our open living space as it is all white and airy, with natural touches, which I find very calming. I've hopefully struck the right balance between minimalism and comfort.
It's a tightrope balancing act that one. We think you've absolutely aced it. Now here's a question close to our hearts... can you share with us a White, Black or Grey item from your life and tell us about it?
We have a lot of love for our love seat, which is grey. It was the first piece of furniture that we bought together, about 10 years ago, from a now defunct shop in Brighton. We both still love it as much as the day we bought it and it just goes to show that if you really love something (and you can afford it of course - this was in the sale!) then you should go for it.
Wise words indeed my dear. Talking of affording things... If time and money were no object, where would you take your dream holiday?
Now this is very tricky as I have a lot of places on my wishlist! My current dream destinations would be Porto, Lisbon and Copenhagen. I have developed a fear of flying so can only manage short distances! I am extremely fortunate to have travelled extensively in my twenties (Australia, NZ, India, Sri Lanka, South America) and to have had holidays all over, but there are still lots of places left to discover!
Wow. Sounds like some proper globetrotting you did in your younger days then! We're not the hugest fans of flying either, and took the sleeper train to Copenhagen on our last trip there, an experience we highly recommend! Ok, last question... could you tell us about another creative whose work you love?
Thanks so much for sharing these with us, just look at all those colours! I suppose technically we shouldn't approve... oh well!
OK, tea break over. Thanks for your time Gayle, that was most engaging. We have a HUGE case of love-seat-envy now.
We hope you enjoyed this new feature. Do feel free to comment with any thoughts... perhaps your own dream holiday destinations, beloved monochrome items, or favourite makers - go on, share the love.
