More information: 90% of our bee species in the UK are solitary bees, bees who don't produce honey, don't have a queen and don't live in hives, but who are really important pollinators. By putting the Beepot in your garden, allotment or urban space you are helping the solitary bees by providing a bee house nesting place for them so they can continue with the vital pollination work they do. Solitary bees are fascinating to watch and a wonderful way to introduce kids to bees, solitary bees have no queen or honey to protect, meaning they are non-aggressive and won’t sting. Bee houses can be a simple way to do something to help our declining bee population, alongside bee friendly planting and other wildlife friendly measures. The Bee Pot should be positioned in a warm sunny spot, south facing, with no vegetation in front of the fascia. Ideally placed at least 1 metre from the ground with no upward limit. The Bee Pot is solid at the back and has moulded cavities where the bees will lay their eggs, sealing the entrance with mud or chewed up vegetation. Offspring emerge in the Spring and begin the process of nesting again, repeating the cycle. Solitary bees are facing a dramatic decline in numbers due to disease, an increase in chemical use and habitat loss. Pollinators account for 1/3 of the food we eat and are a vital part of our environment. Solitary bees are harmless and will not sting you unless you handle them roughly, even then their stings are not painful, meaning they are safe to encourage around pets and children.
